The Europeans brought the colonial style of architecture to America when they left their native lands and settled here in the 17th century. They wanted to build houses that would remind them of their homes in Europe, although they altered and adapted the structure of homes so that it would suit to the corresponding regions where they lived. The colonial homes dint look exactly alike in the earlier days, but all the homes had few things in common – central chimneys, symmetrical designs, steep roofs, exterior door and small windows. Large paneled doors were used exactly at the center on the front with a decorated crown. Sometimes the crown would be extended forward for forming a covered porch with the support of the columns.

There are various types of colonial doors available. You need to choose the right door that will match your home’s structure and meet your needs. These tips will help you understand what you should look for when getting the colonial style doors for your home.

In the earlier colonial homes, darker colored wood was used, primarily earth tones. Also, harder wood was used, such as cherry, mahogany and walnut. While the colonial doors of traditional styles are still available, you can also find doors made of other kinds of wood with far lighter colors.

Most of the colonial doors come with raised panels, making them common and easily recognizable. Often vertical panels are used in the doors and they look like floating between the rails and stiles, which together hold the panels in place. The panels also come in various sizes and shapes, but five-panel doors are very common with one middle panel being more horizontal. The colonial doors also come with up to ten panels, making the doors look more elegant.

The shape of the panel is most of the times flat and at right angles to rails and stiles. Sometimes, they are also beveled on the sides to create raised panels. This creates an illusion that the colonial door is thicker than it actually is. Each panel in the door can also be removed and fitted with your choice of glass for creating the perfect glass panel colonial door. The glass panel door is beneficial as it allows the natural light to enter the home. It also provides privacy and security to the people living inside the home.

The colonial doors come in different designs that allow you to install the door according to your needs. In a glass panel door, you can use stained or colored glass to enhance the overall look of the door. With so many options available, you just need to choose the best colonial door for your home to make the house more beautiful and stylish.

It’s great to learn that you can find colonial doors in dark and light colors. My wife and I are wanting to renovate our house and we are wanting to add some traditional doors to it. I’ll be sure to tell her that we should look at colonial doors to add to our home.
